Behind the Design: Marcel Breuer's Timeless Wassily Chair

Designed in 1925 by architect and Bauhaus instructor Marcel Breuer, the Wassily Chair pioneered the use of both bent steel and industrialised furniture manufacturing.

Inspired by the curved steel handlebars of bicycles, Breuer crafted this chair with a seamless frame of thin steel tubes bent into gentle curves. The design originally featured strips of canvas stretched across the frame, later updated to leather straps.

Named for painter Wassily Kandinsky, the chair's radical tubular steel construction was initially criticized. But over time, the sheer visual poetry of its skeletal form became widely admired.

Breuer had created an affordable, industrially-produced chair that felt lightweight yet sturdy. The Wassily Chair grew ubiquitous in modernist homes and offices, and reproduced countless times around the world.

This one iconic chair helped globalise both modern design and bent steel furnishings. Customers today continue to appreciate the Wassily for its airy, minimalist aesthetic, smart use of materials, and status as a groundbreaking design classic.

It beautifully epitomises both Bauhaus principles and the machine age.
